YOUTH VOLUNTEER RECEIVES BESSERUNG
New Braunfels youth volunteer leader and fireman Mario Luna was named the 2009 Besserung winner at the Chamber’s 91st annual meeting and banquet last Friday evening. Luna has been a New Braunfels resident for the last sixteen years and has dedicated himself to the youth of the community as well as the less fortunate. Luna directed the New Braunfels community Thanksgiving Dinner the last three years which has grown from 1,400 meals in 2006 to over 3,000 in 2008. He has organized multiple summer Christian basketball camps and has provided 500 boys and girls in the community practice and game facilities along with a drug free curriculum. Congratulations, Mario Luna!
BANQUET KICKS OFF DESTINATION: NB 2020
The theme of last Friday evening’s 91st Chamber banquet was Destination: NB 2020. A large dream catcher was hung in the Civic/Convention Center corridor depicting the major goals and projects of the Chamber for the next ten years. 2009 Chair of the Board Marian Benson passed the gavel to 2010 Chair Larry Hammonds and keynoter Dr. Mart Dotzour gave an economic outlook for the year. Awardees were honored and following the banquet entertainment was provided in the ballroom by Two Tons of Steel. Tickets for the evening were sold out three weeks in advance with a long waiting list.
TODAY LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE
Today is the last day to register to vote for the March 2 primary. Early voting will take place February 16 – 26. A candidate’s forum sponsored by the Leadership New Braunfels Alumni Association will be held Thursday at the Landa Haus with all thirteen candidates vying for county wide office present. Attendance is limited to Leadership alums and the media. Practice democracy by voting!
NOMINATE NEXT SMALL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR
Nominations are now being accepted for the Chamber’s Small Business Person of the Year Award. The award recognizes outstanding contributions of small business persons to the economy and overall progress of the New Braunfels trade area. Selection is based on an individual’s successful operation of a company and evidence of significant contributions to the community. To be eligible, you must have owned/managed the business for a minimum of five years, be a member of the Chamber for five years, have been in the same business for a minimum of five years, exhibit community involvement for a minimum of five years, and must have employed fewer than fifty employees during the past five years.
LEARN HOW TO LEAD AND MARKET EFFECTIVELY
Following last week’s highly successful two-day run of the Google Secrets seminar, New Braunfels Business University will present Learning How to Lead and Market Effectively to the Current Generation of Consumers and Employees (Generation Y) on Wednesday, February 24. The seminar will be held from 11:15 am to 1:00 pm in the Chamber’s Honors Hall. Who is Generation Y? How do you motivate them? How do you market to them? Learn about the demographic transitions in Texas and specifically Comal County and the New Braunfels area and the characteristics of Generation Y compared to other groups. ALUMS TO BOWL FOR KIDS
The 14th annual Leadership New Braunfels Alumni fundraiser will be held Saturday, March 6 at the Mission Valley Bowling Club. The LNB Alumni Association invites all members of the LNB Class of 2010 and LNB graduates to this fundraising tournament with the proceeds benefiting Chamber Leadership Programs. LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE TICKET DEMAND HIGH
The Arrangements Committee for the 44th annual Texas Legislative Conference met last week and learned that ticket sales for this years event has already surpassed last year. Committee members reviewed the finalized program that will feature a reception for Texan of the Year and Spurs owner Peter Holt on Thursday evening, March 18 and the half-day conference on Friday morning, March 19. Well-known Texas leaders have been tapped as speakers and panelists. The noon luncheon will feature a “roast” of Conference Chair Representative Edmund Kuempel by current and former Texas House Speakers. You won’t want to miss that!
BUSINESS GROUP ADOPTS NATIONAL PRIORITIES
At last Wednesday’s annual meeting of the Texas Association of Business, national affairs priorities for the 2010 – 2011 congressional year were adopted. Over 100 different issues in fourteen different major categories were adopted. Your local Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee will meet this Thursday to review that document as well as the Chamber’s new website for legislative affairs at www.nbacts4business.com . Interim studies in the Texas House and Senate are also on the agenda. Time to act!
CVB PROVIDES SERVICES TO LOCAL INDUSTRIES
The services that the Chamber’s Convention and Visitors Bureau provides to visitors and the local visitor industry is well documented. However, did you know that your CVB also provides needed data and products to local industry on demand? One high tech local employer will be holding a national meeting at their facility soon and wanted to educate attendees from around the country about the community. The CVB will be providing video footage so that the firm can create a customized video/powerpoint presentation for the group. Now that’s service! Your CVB is also working on new creative as well as continued efforts in the arts and cultural field, FAM tours, planning for the Winter Visitors Reception at Gruene Hall, and more social networking innovations and opportunities.
EDF ANNUAL MEETING TOMORROW
Barry Williams, Chairman of the Greater New Braunfels Economic Development Foundation, will chair tomorrow’s annual meeting of that group at T-Bar-M. Members will elect directors and officers for 2010, review a proposed annual budget and professional services agreement, and hear a presentation from City Airport Manager Lenny Llerna. EDF Executive Director and Chamber President Michael Meek will deliver an annual activities report as well. The local EDF is the “private” in the community’s private/public partnership in economic development efforts and the BUILD NB brand.
CENSUS PROVIDES EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
