Tiffany Mayne and Staci Kirpach of KGNB-KNBT and the SHINE initiative were honored with a Chair of the Board Award in the field of youth development at today’s Chamber Board of Directors meeting. The SHINE Initiative they created is a New Braunfels-based Christian outreach organization aimed at equipping women of all ages to make positive life choices for themselves, their families and their communities. The recent SHINE conference brought over 525 girls and moms together for a two-day event tackling topics such as self esteem, accountability, peer pressure, staying in school and strengthening the relationship between mother and daughter. Congratulations, Tiffany and Staci!

At today’s Chamber Board of Directors meeting, the major topic/presentation was local-based higher education. Guest presenters were Dr. Federico Zaragoza of Alamo Colleges, Dr. Jodi Duron of the Comal ISD, and Chester Jenke with the Central Texas Technology Center. 4B INVESTS IN EDUCATION, AIRPORT AND ROADS
The New Braunfels Industrial development Corporation (4B Board) last Thursday evening made recommendations of major funding initiatives at the New Braunfels Municipal Airport and along Goodwin Lane. The Board also recommended that the City Council approve a contribution toward an update to the Clarus Study. That study in 2001 led to the creation of the Central Texas Technology Center. The City of Seguin via their 4A Board is funding the other half of the study update. The airport project includes strengthening a runway in order to receive a 90-10 match from TxDOT Aviation.

TAX FACTS: WHERE THE DOLLARS COME FROM
Dr. Martin Regalia is the Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for Economic Policy with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Regalia recently wrote an article tracking federal revenue sources via income taxes (last Thursday was the deadline for income tax payments). The two biggest sources of federal revenue in order of magnitude are individual income taxes (43.5%) and payroll taxes (42.3%). Higher income groups have consistently paid a disproportionately large share of the tax bill with the top 1% of all households paying 28.3% of total federal tax liabilities, the top 10% paying 55% of all federal taxes, and the top 20% paying 69.3%. The middle quartile paid only 9.1% and the lowest quartile paid .08%. The lower 40% of income earners do not pay any federal income tax.
