U.S. CHAMBER HERE TO ADDRESS NATIONAL ISSUES
This Wednesday, April 7, the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee will welcome Pete Havel, the Executive Director with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Honors Hall at 7:30 am for a briefing. Havel oversees the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas for U.S. Chamber of Commerce activities. The U.S. Chamber is America’s largest business federation representing over 3 million businesses, associations and chambers of commerce throughout the country. Our local Chamber recently polled the membership to ascertain their “Top 5” national issues and Havel will address those at the briefing. He has extensive political, legislative and media experience and will also speak on the nation’s political and legislative climate. Havel is a Baylor graduate and lives in Dallas.
CONGRESSMAN SMITH GOES “INSIDE THE CHAMBER”
Congressman Lamar Smith accompanied Chamber President Michael Meek on last Wednesday’s “Inside the Chamber” Show on KGNB Radio. Smith reviewed recent health care legislation and its impact on the nation, state as well as locally. Smith voted against the health care bill. If you missed the program you can still hear it by going to the Chamber or radio station’s website where it is available as a podcast. While in New Braunfels, Smith visited the New Braunfels Municipal Airport as well as Landa Park.
CVB WORKING ON MULTIPLE FRONTS
The Chamber’s Convention and Visitors Bureau is busier than ever with multiple projects on its plate. Press releases have been built for the upcoming summer season, the proposed new marketing campaign will be reviewed today at a CVB Strategy and Steering Committee meeting, Golf Fest participation is set and ready for this month’s tourney, a reunion kit is being created, hospitality training is planned, and an arts and cultural timeline and stories are being built in order to promote that segment of the tourism industry. CVB Director Judy Young was recently elected to the Executive Committee of the Texas Hill Country Trails Association and the CVB will be participating in a workshop at Landa Haus with the Texas Historic Commission. ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO IH-35 TOPIC TUESDAY
The Chamber’s Transportation Committee will meet Tuesday morning in Honors Hall with a presentation on the SH 130 Project. Interim TxDOT Area Engineer Frank Holzman along with Ben Engelhardt will be the Chamber’s guest presenters. The alternate route to IH-35 currently runs from Georgetown north of Austin to south of Austin near Cabella’s. Eventually, SH 130 will run parallel to IH-35 all the way to east of Seguin and connect with IH-10.
BAPTIST HOSPITAL EXEC TO ADDRESS EDF
Senior Vice President of Development Mike Zunker of the Baptist Health System will be the guest presenter at the next Economic Development Foundation quarterly luncheon set for Tuesday, April 20. The meeting will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott River Village . Baptist Health System recently announced plans to build a hospital on property located at the Town Center at Creekside. SECRETARY OF STATE TO ADDRESS LNB GRADUATION
Esperanza “Hope” Andrade, the 107th Texas Secretary of State, will be the guest speaker at the May 11 Leadership New Braunfels graduation. The event will be held a T Bar M Resort and Conference Center and is a ticketed event. Go to www.nbcham.org/lnb and get your tickets. The agenda includes a buffet luncheon, speech by Secretary Andrade, and presentations to class members. The Class of 2010 will bring the total graduates for the Leadership New Braunfels program to 422.
NB FIRM GETS “EXTREME MAKEOVER”
Yesterday evening if you were watching the two-hour season finale of ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition, New Braunfels manufacturer EH Systems, LLC was featured. EH Systems, LLC structural insulated panels (SIPs) were used to build the largest Extreme Makeover Home Edition house to date, almost 6,000 sq. ft. The house was built in one week in Galveston. The home was built for a large family impacted from Hurricane Ike that has been living in a trailer. Congratulations to EH Systems for their contributions and national exposure!
