TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE MEETS

The Chamber’s Transportation Committee met for their bimonthly meeting on April 8, at Honors Hall.  More than 28 people attended to hear San Antonio TXDOT District Engineer Mario Medina’s presentation.  Committee Chair LARRY ALEXANDER presided at the meeting and introduced Medina whose program focused on TXDOT’s funding tools, TXDOT’s new project tracking system PDMS,  TXDOT’s “Vision 2009” and legislative issues currently being discussed at the 81st Legislature.   Mr. Medina’s presentation was well received by the audience, sparking many questions about the future of transportation in New Braunfels and Comal County.  There were also many accolades spoken about the local TXDOT staff and how Mr. Medina has been so helpful in his first 8 months at the SA District offices.  The other local agency engineers also reported on their current work and upcoming projects.  TXDOT Area Engineer GREG MALATEK reported on the SH 46 west project, FM 306 status of the grade separations, and the Walnut Ave. project from Landa St. to Loop 337.  TOM HORNSETH, Comal County Engineer, reported on the off road bridge system work, new flood control dam progress, and plan being in place for county road resurfacing for Summer 2009.  Jim Klein, City Engineer, stood in for STEVE RAMSEY and reported on several street projects currently under construction, status of Walnut Ave. from IH 35 to Landa St., the Gruene R. hike and bike trail, and current meetings assessing street conditions and prioritizing them for future milling and overlays.  The next meeting of the Transportation Committee is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 7, at 7:30 am in Honors Hall.  For more information about this Chamber committee call RUSTY BROCKMAN at 625-2385.

 

HOSPITAL EXEC HONORED BY CHAMBER

CHRISTUS SANTA ROSA President and CEO Don Beeler was honored at the April 20 Chamber Board of Directors meeting with a Chair of the Board Award in the field of healthcare.  Chamber Chair MARIAN BENSON made the presentation.  Up to only six such awards can be bestowed each year.

 

Beeler led the CHRISTUS SANTA ROSA effort in their acquisition of McKenna Hospital last year.  In its first year of operation locally, they have invested over $14 million in upgrades including dialysis  and interventional cardiology.  The equity from the sale netted the community a foundation dedicated to wellness programs. 

 

CHRISTUS SANTA ROSA has garnered the prestigious Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for four consecutive years.  Beeler is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a two-time recipient of that organization’s Senior Level Healthcare Executives Regents Award.  He is a former Chairman of the Catholic Health Association of Texas and Past Chair of the Texas Hospital Associations PAC.  He serves currently on the Greater San Antonio Chamber board.   

 

LAMAR SMITH HONORED WITH SPIRIT OF FREE ENTERPRISE AWARD

U.S Congressman Lamar Smith received the Spirit of Free Enterprise Award April 16 from Chamber Chair of the Board MARIAN BENSON at the WOODS CYCLE COUNTRY Business After Hours "Mixer".
