BANQUET TO KICK OFF 2010


The 91st Chamber banquet is set for January 29 in the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center and is the unofficial kick-off to the New Year for the business community.  It will be an evening you don’t want to miss!  The theme is Destination:  NB 2020 with keynoter Dr. Mark Dotzour.    Attendees will receive a served dinner, special gift memento and the unveiling of the Besserung Award will occur.  Following the brief program, the ballroom will be alive with music from “Two tons of Steel”.   If you have not purchased your tickets to the “after party” there is still time.  Call the Chamber today! NEW BLUE COAT TEAMS FORMED FOR 2010


2010 Captains and Co-Captains met in Honors Hall on January 13 to pick their new teams for the year’s Blue Coat team competition.  Captains are Bill Kotylo, Moe Schwab and Stoney Williams.  Co-Captains include Barron Casteel, Jackie Heitkamp, Bob Rayfield, Sally Singley, Joe Timmins and Cora Jane Welsch.  Each team was assigned two prospective Blue Coats.  Prospective Blue Coats for 2010 are Cheryl Casteel, Rob Clark, Melissa Etheredge, Allison Dietert Humphries, Jeff Lindley and Suzanne Williams.  The competition kicks off in January and will continue through December.  Recognition will be given to the team with the best attendance record and for the most new dollars collected at the Blue Coat “mixers” scheduled throughout the year.

2010 “MIXERS” SCHEDULED


A complete list of 2010 “mixers” has been created and is now on the Chamber’s website.  You may view the list by clicking here.  A printed copy of the “mixer” dates will be sent out in a couple of weeks and will also include your 2010 Membership Card.  This Membership Card will be your ticket for all “mixers”.

BLUE COAT NOMINEES FOR 2010 SET


The Chamber Blue Coat organization held their annual meeting in December and reviewed a successful year of over 100 events worked.  Susan Granzin, Susan Heidrich, Roger Tuttle and Dib Waldrip were eligible for senior status and were voted on and six openings created for 2010.  Nominated to fill those new positions were Cheryl Casteel of Casteel and Casteel, Rob Clark of Vickrey & Associates, Melissa Etheredge of First State Bank, Allison Dietert Humphries of Property Professionals, and Jeff Lindley of The Lindley Company.  Prospective new Blue Coats have an attendance requirement to meet throughout 2010 as well as certain levels of membership sales.

2010 MEMBERSHIP CARDS IN THE MAIL


Your 2010 Membership Card along with a “Mixer” Schedule, list of Member-To-Member Discount participants, and a Year in Review & Plan of Action Chamber Magazine were mailed to the membership on February 9th. REMEMBER, printed invitations are no longer being mailed and members will need to present their Membership Card to the Chamber staff at each “Mixer” event. Membership Cards were only sent to the designated representative of each business with the Chamber.

FIRST CHAIR OF BOARD AWARD FOR 2010 BESTOWED

Carolyn Casey of Home Instead Senior Care  is the recipient of the first Chamber Chair of the Board Award for 2010.  Chair-Elect Corey Hall announced the honor at today’s Chamber Board of Directors meeting.  Casey was honored in the field of elderly care.  Her firm’s “Be a Santa to a Senior” Program has over the last six years collected, wrapped and distributed more than  1,000 gifts for area seniors who were alone for the holidays.  Casey opened the local office of Home Instead Senior Care in 2001 and their caregivers assist clients with a variety of daily activities that improves the quality of life and helps the elderly in our area maintain their independence.  Congratulations, Carolyn!

CCJLA HOSTS CHAMBER “MIXER”


Over 350 Chamber members attended the February Business After Hours Membership “Mixer”;  The Comal County Junior Livestock Association and Copper Ridge sponsored the event at the Comal County Fairgrounds.  Door prize winners were H.A. Brotze, James Cartwright and Tim Rush.  The mystery member was Aja Edwards of ERA D. APRIL “MIXER” TAKES OFF!


The April Business After Hours Membership  "Mixer"  held at New Braunfels Aero Service, had a  turn out of over 200 members. Not present to win the $50 Chamber Cash Prize drawing was Tommy Hill with the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority. Door Prize winners were Joe Timmins, Kookie Barboza, Wynn Wallace with NB Mattress Futon’s/ Furnishings, Ronald Schmid with Texas Heritage Construction, Noreen Sippel. Over 60 Blue Coats attended a Blue Coat “mixer” in Honors Hall on April 27.  Chair of the Board Larry Hammonds thanked the Blue Coats for their dedication in supporting Chamber members by attending ribbon cuttings, ground breakings, etc.  Hammonds introduced the 2010 prospective Blue Coats which include Cheryl Casteel of Casteel & Casteel, Rob Clark of Vickrey & Associates, Melissa Etheredge of First State Bank, Allison Dietert Humphries of Property Professionals, Inc., Jeff Lindley of The Lindley Company, and Suzanne Williams of NBU.  Stoney Williams was recognized as Blue Coat of the Quarter and Joe Timmins received the Sr. Blue Coat of the Quarter.

MAY “MIXER” HELD AT ROCKIN R’

GRANDSTANDER AWARD TO BE PRESENTED AT BOARD MEETING


Over 130 Chamber leaders and guests attended the Chamber Leaders Picnic on May 6 at Schlitterbahn at the Rapids.  Some guests arrived a little early and enjoyed a few games of chance before dinner.  Chari of the Board Larry Hammonds introduced special guests and informed everyone in attendance of a few important dates to remember in May.  The Blue Coat of the Quarter and the Sr. Blue Coat of the Quarter were recognized and a recap of the Blue Coat competition was announced.  The Grandstander was unable to attend the picnic so the ever popular “BOOT” will be awarded at the Board luncheon.

The first new member recognition reception was held on April 28 at Landmark Lofts.  New members from January through April, Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs, and Chamber staff were invited to a meet and greet hour long reception honoring new Chamber members.  Chair of the Board Larry Hammonds briefed the new members on the different Chamber divisions and committees available for their participation.  New members were then given an opportunity to introduce themselves and give a brief commercial on their business.

Over 250 Chamber members attended the June Business After Hours Membership “Mixer”.  The “mixer” was held at the Elk’s Lodge and sponsors included Caterall, New Braunfels Elks Lodge #2279 , Petals to Go and Wright Distributing Co., Inc.  Door prize winners were Tiffany Curley of Curley Chiropractic, Ron Reaves, Joe Rogers and James Stolte.  The mystery member was Joe Castilleja of Sente Mortgage and the 10th person to shake his hand and win $10 was Melissa Moreno of New Braunfels Title.  Not present to win the Chamber’s $150 cash drawing was Brandon Dietert of the New Braunfels Smokehouse.  Maybe next time Brandon!

MIXER SEES HIGH TURNOUT - AUGUST “MIXER”


Over 400 Chamber members and guests attended the August Business After Hours Membership “Mixer” at the Courtyard by Marriott by River Village last Thursday evening.  Sponsors for the event included the Marriott, Nash Family Catering and Wright Distributing Company.  Not present to win the $250 Chamber cash drawing was Roy Shannon of Hunter Junction.  Sorry, Roy!

FAIR PARADE INCLUDES CHAMBER OFFICERS

Chamber officers represented the Chamber during the Comal County Fair Parade in downtown New Braunfels.  Chamber Chair of the Board Larry Hammonds and Chair-Elect Corey Hall were accompanied by Immediate Past Chair of the Board Marian Benson and Vice Chair Sandy Kibby.  Many thanks to Bluebonnet Motors for providing the Mustang convertible.

SHINE FOUNDERS HONORED FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Tiffany Mayne and Staci Kirpach of KGNB-KNBT and the SHINE initiative were honored with a Chair of the Board Award in the field of youth development at the April Chamber Board of Directors meeting.  The SHINE Initiative they created is a New Braunfels-based Christian outreach organization aimed at equipping women of all ages to make positive life choices for themselves, their families and their communities.  The recent SHINE conference brought over 525 girls and moms together for a two-day event tackling topics such as self esteem, accountability, peer pressure, staying in school and strengthening the relationship between mother and daughter.  Congratulations, Tiffany and Staci!

CHAMBER HONORS TWO FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Heritage Village volunteers Carl Druebert and George Guidroz were honored with Chair of the Board Awards in the field of historic preservation at the May Chamber Board of Directors meeting. The award is designed to honor those individuals who have made significant contributions to the community in a specific field of civic endeavor and no more than six are chosen for this award each year. Over the last five years both gentlemen have worked tirelessly for the establishment of the Heritage Village Living History Experience, constructing blacksmith shops and livery stables, the general store, a washhouse/windmill, and a storage barn among others. The twosome also recently completed a year long interior restoration of the 1851 Specht farm house which now houses the museum office and meeting rooms for the Heritage Society. Both will be further honored at the Chamber banquet next January 28, 2011.

SCHENDEL HONORED FOR SUPPORT OF VETERANS


At the June Chamber Board of Directors meeting, John Schendel of the American Legion received a Chair of the Board Award in the field of veterans affairs.  No more than six individuals are chosen for the Chair of the Board Award each year.  Schendel joined the American Legion locally in 1992 following a twenty-three year career in the U.S. Air Force.  He has held many positions there including Post Commander and works with other local veterans organizations in the county to assist veterans.  Schendel is also known locally as the "Weather Guru" on KGNB Radio.  Congratulations, Guru!

WATSON HONORED FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Iva Gene Watson was surprised with a Chamber Chair of the Board Award in the field in youth development at the July Chamber Board of Directors meeting. No more than six such awards are bestowed each year and recipients are honored at the Chamber banquet the following January. "Mom", as she is known by thousands of local youth over the last three decades, has given service to the New Braunfels Aquatic Club, Band Boosters, Sports Club Boosters, New Braunfels ISD, Little League and many more organizations as a key volunteer. Watson helped negotiate the purchase and renovation of the current Parks and Recreation Center and has worked at the Wurstfest festival for over thirty-seven years in costume. She was honored as an Unsung Hero by the Herald-Zeitung for her care of neighbors during illness. The Chamber honors Gene Watson as a quiet warrior, an example of service above self. Congratulations, "Mom"!

OCTOBER “MIXER” - A HOME RUN

A City of a Prince Decree was bestowed to outgoing New Braunfels Mayor Bruce Boyer on May 16 at the Chamber Board of Directors meeting. Boyer is a recent inductee into the Chamber’s Hall of Honor and is a former recipient of the Besserung Award as well. Pictured with Boyer is Chamber Chair of the Board Corey Hall.

John Lovett of River City Builders received the Chair of the Board Award in the field of Natural Resources at the May 16 Board of Directors meeting. Only 6 such awards are bestowed each year. Lovett’s work as an elected representative to the Edwards Aquifer Authority on the community’s behalf was noted. Shown with Lovett is Chamber Chair of the Board Corey Hall.

Chamber Chair of the Board is pictured presenting the Grandstander Award to Stoney Williams at the May 16 Chamber Board of Directors meeting. The award has been in existence since 1972 and “honors” someone who has “stood out” in the previous year. Williams “antics” with the Business Trade Show was one of the several items mentioned that qualified him for the “honor”.

MEMBERS “MIX” AT THE WATERING HOLE SALOON

Over 275 Chamber members attended the monthly Business After Hours Membership “Mixer” at the Watering Hole Saloon on June 16. Sponsors for the “mixer” included Tri City Distributors L.P. and the Watering Hole Saloon. Door prize winners were Karin Boos of New Braunfels Title, Gerald Hartmann, Helgard Hollis, Roxolin Krueger, Karen Reininger of New Braunfels Title, and Bob Schima. The mystery member was Karen Brkich of The UPS Stores and the 10th person to shake her hand and win $10 was Craig Collins of Payroll Express. Not present to win the $800 Chamber cash drawing was Kenny Franklin. Maybe next time Kenny!

DRAWING UP TO $900

The Chamber’s August Business After Hours “Mixer” was held at A-1 Vacation New Braunfels last Thursday.  Not present to win the $850 cash drawing was Brian Foerster of Roy’s Rentals and Campground.  The Mystery Member was Mary Raley of HD Supply and the 10th person to shake her hand and win $10 was Scott Speck of U.S. Food Service.  Sponsors for the mixer along with A-1 Vacation New Braunfels were Caterall, MonsterWeb Inc. and Wright Distributing Company, Inc.  The September Business After Hours “Mixer” has been set for Thursday, September 22 at the Comal County Fair Grounds.
