Naegelin's Bakery
Naegelin’s Bakery began in Goldenbegen House at the
corner of Mill and Seguin streets in 1868. Edouard
Naegelin, Sr. came to town in 1868 and took over the
bakery started by the baker to a Prince, Heinrich
Zuschlag. The bakery is the oldest in the state of
Texas. In 1870, it was moved to its present site on
South Seguin Street. It is believed that soda water was
made in the basement of the building. The Stephen Klein
house located next door was built in 1845.
A proofing cabinet, where the bread was placed to rise,
and many tart pans, cookie cutters, and other tins used
in the bakery, and made by the local Henne Tinning
Company, are on display at the Sophienburg Museum. A
long paddle used to place and remove bread and cakes
from the oven, a large sifter, a dough cutter, rolling
pin and mixing bowl are also displayed there.
After three generations of Naegelin’s operated the
bakery, it was sold in 1980 to the Granzin family, which
are the present owners. Many of the recipes used today
are from the original bakers. Wonderful aromas can be
experienced daily in downtown New Braunfels. The
Granzins have endeavored to keep the products as close
to original as possible. Naegelin’s is the largest full
scale retail bakery in the area.
